Manly Warringah Sea Eagles fought hard in a gritty match as they were defeated by the Wests Tigers 38-14 in round five of the Jersey Flegg Cup, in the first of three matches at 4 Pines park on Sunday.

Manly's two first half tries kept them in contention, trailing by 12 points at the break.

Unfortunately, they were no match for a strong Tigers outfit in the second half conceding three more tries, to suffer their second loss of the season following back-to-back wins in the opening two rounds.

The Sea Eagles struck first after six minutes as Oliver Lawry crossed for his third try of the season.

The centre took a simple pass and changed directions at the line to fool the defence and force his way over to score for a 4-0 lead.

The Tigers quickly hit the lead with three tries in 18 minutes from Iverson Matai, Cameron Kanaan and Mitch Taotua to find themselves leading 14-4.

The Sea Eagles fought their way back into the match when a determined Miles Edler broke through the defence off a short ball at the ten-metre line before spinning out of another tackle to ground the ball for a try in the 34th minute, cutting the deficit to 14-10.

Momentum continued to shift back and forth as the Tigers scored two tries in the final six minutes of the first half through Solomone Saukuru and Will Craig for a 22-10 lead at the break.

It didn't take long for the visitors to carry their momentum into the second half as Heith Pritchard barged his way over the line to score next to the posts, pushing the Tigers' lead to 28-10.

After finding themselves on the back foot for a period of time, Manly hit back with a well-worked try in the corner to winger Aymn Hamilton. Instead of kicking on the last tackle, captain Callum Dowell ran at the line before throwing a looping cut-out pass to Hamilton on the edge to score untouched, cutting the deficit to 28-14.

The visitors shut down any hopes of a comeback with tries to Te Umuariki Heremia-Tukere and Kanaan in the 67th and 72nd minute for a final scoreline of 38-14.
