A gritty defensive effort to capitalising on their opportunities were the pleasing factors for Blacktown Workers Sea Eagles Coach Wayne Lambkin in last week’s win over the Warriors.
The Sea Eagles recorded a gritty 24-18 win in Auckland in round six of The Knock On Effect NSW Cup after getting out to a 16-4 lead midway through the first half to take a two point lead into the break.
The second half was a real dour affair with the Warriors taking an 18-16 lead 12 minutes out from full-time before two tries in five minutes saw Blacktown Workers claim victory.
Rising young full-back Lehi Hopoate crossed for two tries in the win after being shifted back to his natural position after starting the season at centre.
“It was set for set, a couple of errors both ways, and it just went end to end there for a good period of the second half, ‘’ Lambkin said.
“The Warriors came out of that arm battle there in the second half in front after putting some pressure on us down near the tryline.
“They got in front, but they gave us an opportunity. They made an error down in their own end and then from there, we never had to make another tackle in the game for the last five minutes.
“We scored twice to secure the win which was really nice.”
Lambkin took time out to praise Hopoate and front-rowers Austin Dias and James Aitasi.
“Lehi’s tempo and his soft hands and his ability to read the defence, whether to run or pass, was obvious. He is a just a very cool, calm young player,'' Lambkin added.
“Austin and James played 60 minutes each and ran for over 130-140 metres each. It was a real help to us. They steadied the platform early and we started fast on the back of those two players taking us forward."
