It might only be three rounds into the Jersey Flegg Cup season but Manly Coach Scott Kenna is already very happy with his team’s defensive resolve.
A week after breaking through for their first win of the season with a 14-10 victory over the Sydney Roosters following a 16-14 round one loss to Souths, the Sea Eagles backed it up with a commanding 24-6 win victory over the Parramatta Eels last Saturday.
And just like Manly did against the Roosters, the win was built on the back of a strong defensive platform laid in the first half with the Sea Eagles leading 8-6 at half-time.
Kenna said he had been impressed with the leadership and work rate of captain Nicholas Lenaz, who will start at lock this week with Daniel O’Donnell at hooker.
“I was very happy with our defence again. This is a big part of our DNA at the moment,’’ Kenna said.
“Nicholas again led from the front with his energy in defence. I also thought Devante Mihinui was terrific in his second spell in the front row.
“Daniel has played big minutes at hooker in the first three rounds and will do a great job for the team there."
Manly will be looking to make it three straight wins when they take on St George-Illawarra Dragons at Michael Cronin Oval, Gerringong, on Easter Saturday. Kick-off 11.30am.
“We have a big challenge this week against the Dragons who are a very fast team, but the playing group are ready and up for the challenge in Gerringong,'' Kenna added.
