Building on their solid defensive structure is a key focus for Manly’s Jersey Flegg team this week.
The Sea Eagles broke through for their first win of the season last Sunday with a 14-10 victory over the Sydney Roosters that was built on the back of a strong defensive platform laid in the first half.
It allowed the Sea Eagles to take a handy 12-0 lead into half-time following early first half tries to centre Oliver Lawry and second-rower Broden Konz.
Manly then dug deep in defence after the Roosters scored twice in 15 minutes to claim victory after losing by two points to Souths in the opening round.
Sea Eagles Coach Scott Kenna said the first half defensive effort paid off.
“Defensively, I was very happy to hold off the Roosters coming back into the second half. We scrambled well around our effort areas,’’ Kenna said.
“Our focus this week is around working our processes in defence to make sure we continue on from last week’s good effort.”
Kenna said he was impressed with the performance of full-back Blake Metcalf and hooker/captain Nicholas Lenaz.
“Blake was great at full-back. His positioning and kick returns got us on the front foot,’’ Kenna said.
“Nic was good through the middle, bouncing back well from last week.”
