Strong game sees Matthew Lodge called into Manly team

An impressive first up performance in the NSW Cup from new prop Matthew Lodge has seen him make his way into the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles team.

Lodge has been selected to make his Club debut for Manly against Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks at Pointsbet Stadium this Sunday for round 21 of the Telstra Premiership.

The 28-year-old experienced prop made an an immediate impact for Blacktown Workers in his first appearance for the Sea Eagles last Sunday, scoring a try and making 198 metres from 22 runs with 82 post contact metres.

He also made 12 tackle breaks, 19 hit ups, and three offloads in the 24-18 win over Canberra Raiders at Blacktown.

Lodge, who only signed a train and trial contract with Manly last Monday for the rest of the season, played 34 straight minutes in the first half before playing the last 25 minutes of the match.

Manly Coach Anthony Seibold said last week he wanted more competition for positions, hence the signing of Lodge, who has played over 100 first grade games.

“We want to continue to grow and get better as a team,’’ Seibold said.

“Matt brings a lot of experience at a couple of different clubs. He has had his challenges over his career as well, but he brings competition for spots. I don’t shy away from that.

"We shouldn’t have people who are comfortable thinking 'that’s my jersey every week'. We want competition for spots.

“Matt has had a challenging time but some of that is not through his own fault. Some of that has been down to salary cap and roster management.

“I’ve known him since he was 17. I trust him and I know he trusts me.

“He is not in our top 30 but he has got an opportunity here and that’s what we want to give him. I know he will take it."

Lodge is now set to become the 648th player to play first grade for Manly.
