Blacktown Workers Sea Eagles will be searching for their fourth win of the season as they take on the Newtown Jets in the NSW Cup at 4 Pines Park on Sunday, May 14.
Following an impressive second half comeback for a 34-26 victory over the St George-Illawarra Dragon last Sunday, the Sea Eagles will be looking for their fourth victory in six matches under Coach Greg Boulous in the second of three games at Brookvale on Mother’s Day.
After conceding two early second half tries to trail the Dragons 26-8, Blacktown scored 26 unanswered points through tries to Fletcher Myers, Kaeo Weekes and Jackson Ferris, as well as a double from Clayton Faulalo, to help claim the two competition points at HE Laybutt Field.
Ferris, who scored in the 78th minute to seal the match, was satisfied with the victory but said there were plenty of things to work on.
“It was a pretty good win, but we started off too slowly,'' Ferris said.
"Once we came out in the second half, got more focused with the ball and started to make less errors, it was good.
"We just needed to hold the ball and complete our sets, that was pretty much the message at half-time. We came out then and did that.”
Faulalo, who scored two tries in the second half, made a clear point about the importance of staying switched on for the full 80 minutes.
"We pulled together and just played to the end. We just needed to complete sets and stay composed,'' he added.
"It was about getting the boys together and staying in the grind."
Kaeo Weekes, who has drifted between the NRL and NSW Cup sides this season, scored in the 75th minutes to give Blacktown Workers the lead for the first time.
"It was good to obviously get the win, but we were a bit scrappy in the first half. We knew we fell away from our game plan,'' Weekes said.
"It was good to get our rhythm back and score points off the back of it."
Blacktown Workers will need to show plenty of resilience against Newtown early, with the Jets scoring at least 28 points in three of their last four wins. They have also scored five tries in the final ten minutes in those games.
Newtown sit in fourth place on 14 points through six wins and a bye this season, just four points ahead of Blacktown in ninth place with three wins and two byes.
