Experienced Coach Brett Fulton will again be the man to lead the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles SG Ball Cup side in 2023.
This season marks Fulton’s seventh year as SG Ball Coach for the Sea Eagles, a role he remains very passionate about.
“I enjoy coaching this age group (U19s) as the players are still learning what it takes to be successful both on and off the field,’’ Fulton said.
“Since the inception of the Elite Pathways Program, I have wanted to help guide these young men in whatever path they take.
“Lessons learnt here can be most useful in footy but also after footy in whatever career they pursue. “
Although many believe Fulton would succeed at coaching at a higher level, the man himself is more than comfortable, given he runs a very successful company in Brookvale, Fulton Francis, a worldwide leader in independent print solutions.
“A lack of time due to my business interests is the main factor why I don’t currently seek opportunities higher up,’’ Fulton said.
“However, I did make time last year to work with transition players Kaeo Weekes, Zac Fulton, Alec Tuitavake, Gordon Chan Kum Tong, Jamie Humphries and Viliami Fifita.
“It was most rewarding to see Zac and Kaeo make their NRL debut. I am sure a few more will make their debut this year.”
Fulton has given the captaincy role to half-back Tylor Bunting, who had a fine season for the Sea Eagles last year in the SG Ball Cup before getting a taste of Jersey Flegg (U21s).
Lehi Hopoate, Maxwell Taotua, Mitchell Taotua, Rene Bagon, Jake Fulton and Zedrick Tupulua have come up from last year’s Harold Matthews team.
One of the key weapons for the Sea Eagles again will be outstanding young five-eighth Latu Fainu, who has been a dominant force in the junior reps for the past few seasons.
Fainu has also benefited from pre-season training as a full-time NRL top 30 player for Manly.
Fulton said there were several exciting youngsters to keep an eye out including the likes of Kobe Douglas, Max Haley, and Teapo Stoldman to name a few.
“Kobe is new to the team. He is a big powerful centre that has plenty of pace and a good fend. He will be hard to handle,’’ Fulton added.
“Max is a former centre turned back rower. He is very skilful and has the speed and strength to match.
“Teapo is also new. He is a strong centre with good footwork and pace. He has been a great addition to the squad and we are expecting a big season from him.”
The Sea Eagles are still chasing their first SG Ball Cup premiership trophy, finishing runners up in 1990, 1991, 1998 and 2019.
Manly open their season against Western Suburbs Magpies at Campbelltown Sports Stadium on Saturday, February 4. Kick-off 4pm.
