It might have been his club debut but Jackson Hastings looked pretty much at home in the Sea Eagles jersey in Townsville last Saturday night. He was impressive in his stint off the bench, scoring the final try of the game in the 30-8 win over the Cowboys.
In fact, Hastings was even glad he had to bide his time in the Intrust Super Premiership for Blacktown Workers Sea Eagles in the first two rounds of the season.
“I had no dramas starting this year in NSW Cup. I had to earn the respect of players at training and to obviously play decent footy there to get pulled up,’’ Hastings said.
“(Baz) showed a lot of faith in me.
“A lot of people said they (the Cowboys) had some handy players out but they still had a bloke with headgear on there that is probably the best we have ever seen, so we still had to do the job.
“To get it done up there was a credit to us and we get a few troops back next week as well.”
Hastings said he was impressed with the leadership shown by senior players Daly Cherry-Evans and Nate Myles.
“Nate is one of the unsung heroes of this team. He is the cornerstone…the tackles he makes and he just trundles the ball up all day,’’ Hastings said.
“He trains his backside off. We have a lot of respect for Nate.
“Cherry’s two clutch plays, 40/20s and try assists, shows what a great player he is.
“Nate and a lot of the other senior boys played off the back of him. I thought our back five were outstanding too.
“There are a lot good signs going forward but it is no good if we don’t back it up next week (against the Bulldogs).”
